On Saturday evening, January 8th, 2022, I got a call from Ulf and Anette Bechstedt at around 9 p.m. that Holly was not doing well and that the dreaded time had come to let her go.

At this hour on a Saturday there are actually only some impersonal emergency services. That would have been awful putting holly down there.

For very exceptional cases of need I have the private number of the best vet far and wide, our Liesbeth Vanholen in Maaseik. There Holly had been a patient and confidante for many years. I called Liesbeth and explained to her what was going on with Holly and the answer was clear: come here.

Around 11 p.m. we met in front of the Kliniek. The Bechstedts had brought their other 2 dogs so they could be there.

In the special room, there was soft, soothing music, candles were burning, and Holly lay quietly on her favorite pillow. We petted all her and said goodbye. “Holly” crossed the Rainbow Bridge calmly and peacefully. The last image we keep in mind of her is lying with her head on her front paw on her favorite pink-pupure pillow.

We cried together in the parking lot for “Holly”.
